Updated 04 March 2002, 08.49
George Bush's signature on the letter to Emily
Emily wrote a poem about 11 September attacks and sent it to President Bush. She was amazed when she got a reply.

"When I came home from school on 11 September my mum had the TV on.

I sat down and watched an aeroplane crash into the twin towers and then I saw the towers crumbling.

I felt scared and angry.

The next day I had to write a poem for school about a tragic event, I decided to write about the 11 September attack.

Sent poem to the President

President George W Bush
After I had finished, my Nan and Granddad sent a copy of it to the local radio station. The radio station asked me to read my poem out on one of their programmes.

After the interview they asked if I could send my poem to President George Bush at The White House. I agreed.

In February I got a large envelope through the post with a post mark from The White House. I couldn't wait to open the letter.

Powerful man

The White House emblem at the top of the letter
The first thing I noticed was the gold stamp at the top of the letter.

I was very excited to see that it was addressed to me.

I read the whole letter and I was amazed to think that the most powerful man in the world had written to me and thanked me for my thoughts.

Since then I have become very popular, I have been on TV, have been in the local press and have been on radio twice.

I didn't think my homework would cause so much interest and fun."

Emily, 10, Gloucester
