  'Stick to the main roads'
Updated 15 January 2002, 09.21
Many children carry mobiles
Jessica from Wallington has advice for children who walk to school.

"Most children use the common to get to and from my school, about 50% of the pupils carry mobiles.

It may make the pupils feel safe and protected but if you carry a mobile to school there is a risk of being mugged.

We often have police roaming around the common and the other routes children take which help make people feel confident in themselves.

Police on horseback
Having the police on horseback makes people look up to the police and say any worries they have, whether it's something that recently happened or if they just want to know things.

Most of the years have police talks discussing which routes are safer to take, which helps a lot.

Walk with friends

I prefer to go to and from school with a group of friends than on my own because it makes me feel safer and confident in myself.

I would recommend for those of you who walk to school and home after school, to walk with a group of friends than on your own, even if you are late for school always stick to the main roads."
