  Mobiles: 'good for emergencies only'
Updated 20 January 2002, 12.49
Students using their mobiles
Jimmy and Sanchez are both 10 and live in London. This is what they think about mobile phone safety.

Jimmy:
"I think that having a mobile phone is a bad idea.

Some people would argue that mobiles are good for calling 999 quickly but one of the most common reasons for calling 999 is because of the mobile.

Easy targets

For example, mobiles make children very easy targets for criminals.

Girl using mobile phone
When people are on mobiles they seem to lose contact with the outside world. They daydream and forget what is going on around them.

My conclusion is that mobile phones are good for emergencies but bad for everyday use."

Sanchez:
"I use to own mobile phone. But it was stolen at school.

Some kids saw me put it in my coat pocket and after I'd hung my coat up, they came and took it.

One of my friends also had his mobile stolen at the ice rink.

But luckily he was able to put a block on his phone so the person who stole it couldn't use it.

It's hard to say if children should carry mobiles or not, because they need them in emergencies but they could be attacked if they use them.

Look around first

I am getting a new phone but I am going to make sure that when I use it in the street that I look around first and make sure there is no one suspicious hanging around.

Also, I would look around while I was talking and quickly put the phone away if there was someone hanging around watching you.

That would be my best advice."
