  The meaning of pop music
Updated 10 January 2002, 09.16
Westlife
Is pop music changing for good? This is what Niadzi of London thinks.

"The phrase pop music is an abbreviation of popular music.

But people now really only use it for teenybopper music, like Westlife and Atomic Kitten.

More and more children and teenagers are starting to like rock music, like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park.

So does this mean the end of pop music as we know it?

Who's splitting next?

The splitting up of chart-topping pop groups, 5ive and Steps, mean there are hardly any pop bands left.

Hear'Say
Bookies have already put good odds on the British 'Popstars', Hear'Say, splitting before the end of the year.

And the tabloids aren't helping either - recently, a newspaper published a rumour that award-winning S Club 7 were splitting up.

Lots of music styles

Garage and dance music is also getting very popular, along with rock and indie.

Will the term pop music have to be given a different meaning?

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see."
