A helping hand for bullying victims
Updated 27 December 2001, 09.28
Talking can help solve problems
Rachael, from Hereford, reports on a new scheme that helps students with problems or who are being bullied.

"I am a year 10 student at a school in Hereford and I and 11 other students were trained to be CHIPS listeners.

CHIPS stands for Children In Partnership with schools, and it is run with counseling services.

We were trained in how to listen to another student's problems or if they were being bullied.

The project is already showing signs of being a great success.

Talk in confidence

It is a confidential service which is run twice a week by myself and fellow volunteers.

This initiative has been started in Hereford and Worcester and our team will be joining others for a big day to see how different schools run their projects.

We believe that these steps are the first in helping to combat bullying.

Taking action

I think that if more schools begin to set up these sorts of initiatives we would not have half as many problems as there are with bullying.

A lot of people complain that nothing is being done to solve these problems but I'm glad my school is taking some action.

Hopefully in the future more schools will set up these initiatives."
