  Do pop and politics mix?
Updated 25 March 2003, 16.49
Blue arriving at the Brits
In the past few weeks lots of celebs, especially pop stars have been talking about politics and the possible war with Iraq.

Lee from Blue wants to make an anti-war record, but stars like George Michael think this is wrong.

He says pop stars don't know enough about politics to be taken seriously.

But what do you think? Do pop and politics mix?

opening quoteI think that popstars are the ones who will make the most difference because we listen to them and popstars have a right to speak out and tell their feelings.closing quote
Jenny, 11, Launceston

opening quoteCeleb's have the same rights for an opinion as us and what they are saying makes more sense than Tony Blair.closing quote
Jen, 14, Soho

opening quoteI think it's a great idea and people like George Michael shouldn't dis Lee for his ideas.closing quote
Hollie, 14, Kettering

opening quotePop stars brains are made for singing only, they can't focus on things like politics!!! At school they were either singing in class or plaiting their hair!closing quote
Ali, 12, Wakering

opening quotePop stars have opinions as well. So why can't they express the opinion they have? The UK happens to be a free country - so what's the big deal? Just because you happen to sing songs for a living doesn't mean you don't have a right to have an opinion on a VERY important subject. People like George Micheal make me angry. He happened to be a pop star one day. He was in a cheesy band, and I'm sure he wouldn't like people saying he shouldn't have a say.closing quote
Sally, 15, Wales

opening quoteI think that pop stars singing about the war is great. Pops stars will always be listened to by fans and can help people understand more about the war.closing quote
Sealena, 12, California

opening quoteI think that if celebs want to express their opinions, then they should express them however they like.closing quote
Katherine, 14, Stockport

opening quoteI think that if you put the message across in a way that kids today will listen to, then it will work.closing quote
Jade, 15, Wickford

opening quoteI think that some popstars are just using politics as a cheap stunt to sell more of their records. Their record companies tell them what to say anyway so none of it is their own views.closing quote
Richy, 13, Canterbury

opening quoteYeah! We all got to express our opinion by marching so why shouldn't they express theirs?closing quote
Amanda, 13, Carrickfergus

opening quoteSinging an anti-war song is hardly going to prevent war so what's the point?closing quote
Sarah, 14

opening quoteIt is a stupid idea! Pop stars probably don't know ANYTHING about politics.closing quote
Orla, 9, London

opening quoteI think that every one is entitled to their own opinion, especially if it means that Tony Blair will listen to us.closing quote
Kelly, 13, Haverford West

opening quoteI think it's important that everyone gets a say in the matter of the war with Iraq.closing quote
Anthony, Kendal

opening quoteYEAH! Pop stars singing about politics and important issues is BRILLIANT! It doesn't matter that much whether or not they REALLY mean it, they still help make a difference, don't they?closing quote
Ella, 11, Winsolw

opening quoteI think everyone's entitled to an opinion on war, and popstars are certainly in an influential position. However, they shouldn't take it too far. Lots of young people have a popstar for their idol, and try to emulate them as much as they can. But because they're so influential, stars must be extra careful. What they say has really far-reaching effects. I'm not saying they shouldn't have an opinion - everyone should - but they need to be careful how loudly they voice them.closing quote
Claire, 14, Llantwit Major

opening quoteI think if pop stars feel very strongly about war then they should write a song about it, but if they're just doing it for more attention then I don't think they should.closing quote
Kate, 11, Perth

opening quoteGeorge Michael is wrong, because it doesn't matter how much you know, if you are against war and you want show how much, you can make a record. And it's not just pop music, rock stars are also speaking against it. Everybody's opinion counts.closing quote
Lauren, 12, Leicester

opening quoteI think popstars should make anti-war records, and they should make the lyrics meaningful so the world takes the song seriously. If Lee Blue wants to write a song - let him!closing quote
Holly, 13, Ipswich

opening quotePop stars could make an anti-war record if they want, but only if they know plenty about it and the song is really good.closing quote
Natalie, 15, Leics

opening quoteEach lyric in a song has a meaning, music is the expression of feeling. Why shouldn't pop stars release an anti-war record?closing quote
Laura, 13, Southampton

opening quoteMusic is an important part of our lives and influences people's opinions world wide. Examples of this have already been proven through people like Eminem! So why can't we use music to try and stop this war before its to late for all of us?closing quote
Emily, 15, Kingston

opening quoteThey have every right to sing whatever they want. I for one wouldn't buy this single because I don't know enough about the situation and neither does he. In fact, the only ones who really know what is happening are the governments and secret organisations. I think we should leave politics to those who know about it and singing to those who think they can.closing quote
Rhiannon, 15

opening quoteI think that pop stars should have the right to express their feelings in their songs and Lee from Blue is trying to express what the majority of us think already.closing quote
Laura, 15, Hull

opening quoteI think pop stars should just do what they are good at and not to try and get more publicity by making out they know so much more then just how to singclosing quote
Kim, 15, Hampshire

opening quoteI think that if singers want to sing or rap about war then they can. Politics got mixed up with sport a few months back.closing quote
Michelle, 14, Nottingham

opening quoteYeah every one has a freedom of speech ... however there's no point coz Tony Blair's not taking any notice.closing quote
Ash, 14, Nottingham

opening quoteThey can sing whatever they want, we think anti-war songs get the message through better.closing quote
Megern, 10, Glasgow

opening quoteMusic is all about expressing yourself. The whole point of song writing is putting your thoughts and feelings to music. If it's something the artist knows about and feels strongly about then they should be able to express their views, it's their right to freedom of speech...or singing!closing quote
Sarah, 16, Middlesex

opening quoteI think pop stars should have their say, then young people will listen to them and become more involved.closing quote
Clare, 12, Dorchester

opening quoteI think that it's fine for pop stars to sing about anything they want to as long as they know what they're talking about.closing quote
Claire, 12, Southampton
