Should king-size choc bars be banned?
Updated 22 January 2003, 10.17

Chunky choc bars and jumbo crisps should be banned, according to one doctor.

He reckons they are too full of sugar and fat and are making people overweight.

Do you lot need a ban to stop you gobbling, or should you be allowed to decide for yourselves?

Obesity is a huge problem and it's getting worse, but is blaming chunky choc bars the answer?

opening quoteWe think that if you get fat that's your fault. We shouldn't have to suffer for them.closing quote
Khala & Lisa, 15, Wolverhampton

opening quoteWhat kind of a world is a world without king-size chocolate bars?!closing quote
Sharon & Sarah, 11, Bangor, Wales

opening quoteThere's NO point in banning king-size choccie bars because people will by more small ones instead. If people want to eat chocolate they're going to anyway regardless of the sizes the bars are sold in.closing quote
Sofi, 14, London

opening quoteWhy bother banning them????? It's up to you if you want to eat one.if they make you fat or sick then just don't buy one, noones making you eat them.closing quote
Libby, 13, Sheffield

opening quoteI think king-size bars should be banned as they extremely unhealthy and they have around 700 calories!closing quote
Vicki, 12, Ispwich

opening quoteI think they should be banned it just makes it more tempting for overweight people to eat more and more.closing quote
Sophie, 12, Stevenage

opening quoteI think that king-size chocolate bars should be banned because they are over 700 calories which is equivalent to a meal!! It is highly unhealthy. So if you want to be VERY unhealthy then please keep eating them!!!closing quote
Melanie, 13, Dumfries

opening quoteBanning king-size choc bars won't help the obesity problem. It's partly the parents' responcibility to make sure their kid isn't eating it all the time, and the kid's to not eat too much too often. Anyway, dieting doesn't do much for weight-loss anyway. To 'cure' the obesity problem, us kids need more exercise. Banning the TV remote might help more, you have to get up to change the channel! And I agree with others, we'll just buy more regular bars.closing quote
Alan, 14, Fareham

opening quotePeople eat and do what they like, so it's up to them if they want to eat big chocolate or not. They can eat what they want and how they want!!!!closing quote
Annabel, 11, Kirkwall

opening quoteWhat is the point in banning a chocolate bar when there are much worse things like cigarettes which are still being sold and they have a better chance of killing you than a king-sized chocolate bar!closing quote
Elaine, 12, Glasgow

opening quoteNO!!!!! I love king size choc bars, ESPECIALLY Fruit and Nuts! They're cheaper than two smaller ones, and they don't make me fat OR sick. I find a normal size bar too small and HAVE to have more! If king size bars were banned, my choccie cravings would never be satisfied!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!closing quote
Freya, 11, Bristol

opening quoteIt's more down to exercise than the foods that you eat, sure, both influence how fat u get, but if u eat more fat, u should take more exercise to work it off, not ban the food.closing quote
Rye, 8, Adlington

opening quoteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I am the BIGGEST chocoholic EVER, kingsize bars should defintly NOT be banned, it would upset a lot of people... like me!!closing quote
Kirsty, 15, Ramsbottom

opening quoteWhat is the point? Children are only going to buy several more small bars.closing quote
Luke 13, Ashford

opening quoteI don't see the problem with king-size chocolate bars; it's everybody' personal preference and if they make you sick then just buy the standard one instead but how can another 5 grams of chocolate really make that much difference.closing quote
John, 15, Stoke

opening quoteit would be better if all chocolate and crisps were banned.im not saying i dont eat them but if the temptations not there then no-body can eat them.closing quote
Natalie, 15, Essex

opening quoteIt's up to you if you want to buy a bigger bar or not, who's to stop you eating what you want to? and anyway it's better value to buy the bigger one than buying two little ones.closing quote
Ellie, 14, London

opening quoteI'm allergic to chocolate so it doesn't really matter to me. But, I don't see why they should be banned. People will start to just buy two normal bars instead of a kingsize. Even unhealthier!closing quote
Grace, 12, Darlington

opening quoteI think big chocolate bars are good - I buy one on Friday morning as a treat & eat 1/2 at break & 1/2 at lunch! Doing that is cheaper than buying two smaller ones - & two smaller ones have even more chocolate anyway!closing quote
Lou, 12, Essex

opening quoteWell, if docs want! I don't like choccie that much. I think they should ban big-eat crisps coz I'm an addict!closing quote
Laura, 13, Southampton

opening quoteThere is nothing wrong with king-size chocolate bars! People should just learn how to balance their diet and should do enough exercise. closing quote
Peter, 15, Belgium

opening quoteIt saves money - if people can't get a big one, they'll just buy lots of little ones, and it ends up as the same amount of chocolate anyway.closing quote
Helen, 13, London

opening quoteHow is banning king sized chocolate bars solving the problem of overweight children? Goodness sake, what's needed is a long -erm solution, not some cheap trick to make kids a bit miserable!closing quote
Claire, 13, Essex

opening quoteThis is a ridiculous idea. Obesity may be a problem, but surely people are capable of choosing for themselves? Maybe this doctor should put his effort into showing people how to eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly, because unless you ban all chocolate it won't make a difference other than to make people angry. If he's really worried about peoples' health maybe he should try and get tobacco banned...closing quote
Sarah, 15, Wales

opening quoteI don't think they should be banned. I think that it is up to the people who eat them.closing quote
Claire, 14, Cleveden

opening quoteI wouldn't really care if they banned king ones, but I'd care if they made regular bars smaller. It won't help fat people cos they'll just buy more reg.bars.closing quote
Laura, 10, Glasgow

opening quoteI think that they should stop king-size chocolate bars because people can get enough out of a normal size chocolate bar. If you want a big bar your should just buy two barsclosing quote
Rebekah, 10, Grimsby

opening quoteI don't think there should be a ban on king-size crisps or chocolate bars. My reason is because kids get full on these king-size sweets so they won't want anymore and plus less for parents to worry about.closing quote
Caroline, 12, Dewsbury

opening quoteI don't really think it's fair because I love chocolate! But you could just buy two normal ones!closing quote
Louise, 11, Broxburn

opening quoteI don't think just because king-size may be stopped that it will stop the greedy. They will just buy two smaller ones. I always say to my mum and dad, I wish there could be things as nice as chocolate but healthy. The reply is "There's no such thing!" Maybe one day there may be something that is as nice as chocolate but good. But in the meanwhile, portions should be smaller, and prices higher, it would work, with raising prices!closing quote
Laura, 14, Southport

opening quoteIt's the child's choice if they want to buy the chocolate/crisps. The companies are not forcing them to buy them!! Isn't it better value that people can get more for less?closing quote
Alice, 13, London

opening quoteI think king-size choc bars are nice! Say you missed out on lunch or something and you are really hungry, you can buy one of those, can't you? Plus say you are wanting to melt chocolate for a cake or something you can buy a king-size one of those! I think that the doctor was totally out of order saying that! Just because overweight people might eat them now and then does not mean that skinny people and average weighted people should not be able to eat them!!closing quote
Lyndsay, 14, Glasgow

opening quoteThat is not fair! People should be able to choose whether they want to eat a big choco or not. If you can't buy big choco bars they will buy something else. You can't just shift the blame cos you don't want to deal with fat people. A choco bar is not going to change what anyone eats.closing quote
Kirsty, 13, Bolton

opening quoteI think banning them will help. Some people just can't stop themselves from eating.closing quote
Inzagie, 12, London

opening quoteI think king-size chocolate bars should be banned because the normal sized ones are sickly enough!!!closing quote
Melanie, 13, Dumfries

opening quoteI think they should be banned, they are sickly and they make me sick when I eat one.closing quote
Tom, 12, Rochdale

opening quoteThis is so ridiculous. People should exercise self-control when they buy candy! Besides, king-size choc bars aren't solely to blame for kids being overweight! What about lack of exercise and eating other fatty foods? And what about the rest of us who aren't overweight and just want to go home and eat a candy bar after a long day, and to find out that we can't because some other kids are guzzling them? Why should we have to pay extra for two candy bars when all we want is a regular-priced king-size one once in a while? This topic is so ridiculous it shouldn't have even been brought up! Leave us kids and our candy alone!closing quote
Ellie, 12, Canterbury

opening quoteWell, when you eat one a day, everyday, that's pretty bad but for the occasional treat they are fine. If they were banned then people would just buy two instead which is just as bad, if not worse.closing quote
Abbie, 13

opening quoteI think that instead of banning big bars, all kids should go to their doctor a lot more and if they are overweight, their doctor should put them on a diet. Besides, big chocolate bars are good for slimmer people who could get away with eating big bars.closing quote
Sarah, 13, Ireland

opening quoteThat is such a stupid thing to do! If kids are overweight, then don't stop them buying food! If you're overweight, eat a balanced diet and exercise!closing quote
Ros, 11, Leckhampton

opening quoteIt is so typical of adults to try and stop us being able to choose. Greedy people won't stop eating too much just cos they can't buy big chocolate bars anymore, they'll probably buy two regular ones!closing quote
Jack, 14, Penrith
