  Can England cope without Beckham?
Updated 12 April 2002, 15.47

On Wednesday night, in a Champion's League football match against Spain's Deportivo La Coruna, David Beckham was tackled and had a bone in his foot broken.

Doctors are hopeful he'll be able to play during the World Cup, but his recovery in time isn't certain.

Do England need David to win? Or is he just one among many?

Should Becks have been risked in a match like this so soon before a World Cup?

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index

opening quoteWe have the most difficult World Cup group and without our best player it's even more impossible. How is Owen going to score without him?closing quote

opening quoteI think the England team are excellent and would have had a good chance in this year's World Cup. However due to Beckham's recent accident, Sven and his men can kiss the cup goodbye. It's just not the same without him!closing quote
Melissa, 13, Crewe

opening quoteThe rest of the team wouldn't have been picked if he was the only player with talent.closing quote
Maddi, 13, Canterbury

opening quoteEngland can keep dreaming about the World Cup even without Beckham, but they will struggle to beat "world class" teams like the mighty Argentina.closing quote
Sarai, 10, Oxford

opening quoteI think David Beckham is the best player in the world.closing quote
Sam, 10, Aberdeen

opening quoteIt's too early to tell...Maybe the rest of the team will be able to see them successfully through the World Cup.closing quote
Jade, 13, Manchester

opening quoteI feel very sorry for David Beckham. He loves being on pitch and playing in every match. And now he is going to miss out on playing in a huge event. I hope he can recover. So he can at least play in the World Cup finals. Good luck David.closing quote

opening quoteI think England might OR might not do well without Becks. They might because they have good fill ins like Paul Scholes, Steve McManaman or Keiron Dyer BUT they don't have ANY one as FANTASTIC at free kicks as Becks. Let's just hope he recovers quickly.closing quote
Ryan, 13, Newbury

opening quoteNo. Beckham is our best and most talented player, he's not easy to replace and we don't have anyone of his quality to replace him with. He's the heart of our plays and were nothing special without him.closing quote

opening quoteI'm a big Man U fan. What annoys me is how people's attitudes have changed. If this had been in the middle of the season, everyone would have laughed because it only would have affected Man U. Now it's nearly the World Cup, everybody cares. It's not fair, people only care because of England's hopes, not Man U's or Beckham's.closing quote
