Anxious mogs get sick from stress
Updated 27 October 2004, 18.51
Does this cat look stressed to you?
Cats can get sick from feeling stressed out, according to new research.

Feline experts at Edinburgh University studied a group of cats who were unwell with bladder problems and compared them to the healthy cats they lived with.

Researchers found that the many of the sick cats were stressed out by the rival cats living in their house.

Top of the list for making moggies feel traumatised was dealing with a rival cat living in the house, followed by moving home and new person moving in.

Scientist Dr Danielle Gunn-Moore said cats can sometimes be upset by their feline friends.

"If a cat is living with another cat where there is a conflict, this caused long-term stress which was a significant factor in the development of bladder disease."

Wet food and water

University researchers suggest cats with bladder illness can feel better if they're fed wet food and encouraged to drink lots of liquids.

Adding tuna-flavoured ice cubes to water could also help tickle their taste buds.
