  Giant snails menace Florida pond
Updated 29 July 2004, 15.42
Giant snail

Thousands of giant snails are causing chaos in a central Florida Lake - the slitherers are eating all the plants.

Without the plants, algae will form and they rid the water of oxygen and the fish living there will 'drown'.

The baseball-sized slimers are normally found in South America and no one knows how they've come to live in Florida.

It looks like Floridians will have to go wading and remove them all to save the lake - it shouldn't be too hard - snails aren't known for their speed.

On the move

Biologists say the snails are on the move, and quickly reproducing, so something needs to be done quickly.

The eco-system of the lake, called Lake Brantly, is very delicate.

An eco-system is the balance between everything living in a given environment.

If you add creatures from elsewhere, or kill off any creatures or plants that are there, you can upset the balance which has serious consequences for all living things.
