Baby rhino is OK after trampling
Updated 28 July 2004, 15.57

A baby rhino born in a zoo in Germany is recovering after its mum stepped on it by accident.

Baby Patna was born on 21 July. Keepers believe the baby was stepped on by his mum, Betty, who sadly squashed her first born babe in 2002.

A vet has put Patna's poorly leg in a cast to fix it and has treated him for injuries caused by falling over.

Keepers say Patna's mum is clumsy but loving and expect both mother and baby to thrive.

Keepers are giving Patna extra special attention - and his wounds are healing.

Plaster cast

Patna will have to wear the plaster cast on his front left leg for up to five weeks.

Keepers are pleased that Patna is doing well as only four or five rhinos are born in captivity each year in Europe.
