Penguin is found dumped in garden
Updated 18 May 2004, 16.52
Piglet the penguin takes a break and has a splash in his pond
Piglet the penguin is recovering after being kidnapped from her home then abandoned in an overgrown garden.

The rare penguin was snatched on Sunday night after thieves climbed over a two metre fence to reach her enclosure.

On Monday she was found by locals who heard her donkey-like cries and called staff at Scarborough Sea Life Centre.

Centre manager Ian Hawkins said her abduction appeared to be a cruel prank: "There are some sick, sick people out there, I'm afraid."

Piglet originally came from Peru and lives at the centre with 700 endangered Humboldt penguins.

Penguins feel stress

She and her partner George have now been reunited.

Both of them will have to take antibiotic medication for two weeks in case Penguin's immune system has been affected by her traumatic experience.

Piglet's keepers will also be keeping a careful eye on her as being handled by strangers is especially stressful for penguins.

The Sea Life Centre is also looking at ways to increase security for all their penguins.
