Unhappy kids talk to pets first
Updated 18 May 2004, 07.56
Children like to talk to their pets, like this rabbit
Children who are having difficulties at home chat to their pets rather than people like teachers or social workers.

A study has found that young people living with parents with drink, drug, domestic violence or health problems found it helpful because they found animals easier to talk to.

Many children said that when they did ask experts for help they didn't understand what they were being told.

Friends and family also came high up on the list of people kids open up to.

The report, researched by children's charity the NSPCC, also says that children worry about their mum and dad much more than their parents realise, and boys find it especially difficult to talk about how they feel.
