  Noise harming dolphins and whales
Updated 23 September 2004, 16.16

Our oceans are now so noisy that whales and other marine mammals are in danger of dying, according to biologists.

A marine conservation group is so worried they're launching a campaign to tackle the problem of noise pollution.

The UK's Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society says that key sources of undersea noise are the search for oil and gas and the use of military sonars.

They are proposing an action plan to regulate submarine noise pollution, and says a worldwide treaty may be needed.

There is evidence that noise is causing hearing loss in whales, dolphins and porpoises - it's also injuring them and is sometimes killing them.

It also believes excessive noise is seriously interfering with their ability to communicate with each other.
