  'Bleak future' for red squirrels
Updated 26 April 2004, 10.17
Red squirrel
The future looks bleak for Britain's red squirrels, according to a report.

The fluffy creature has been seriously under threat of extinction for some time and the report says the situation "continues to worsen".

It's thought the species is now doomed to die out in mainland England and southern Scotland.

The Scottish wildcat faces a similar fate. It has become so interbred with regular cats that the report says it is "probably on the brink of extinction".

Otter
Better news for otters

There is better news for otters, though.

Their numbers have dropped dramatically over the last 100 years, but thanks to conservation projects, the report says they are now returning to many parts of the UK.

Efforts to save the water vole are also proving successful.

GM crops

The report, by Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, contains some worrying findings about GM crops.

Research showed that fewer insects lived among GM crops.

Many creatures, including mice, bats and hedgehogs, need to snack on insects to survive.
