Iraqi hit men target sniffer dog
Updated 29 March 2004, 12.03
Blaze the spaniel
An heroic hound was targeted by hit men who wanted to stop him sniffing out hidden weapons in Iraq.

Blaze the springer spaniel was working in Basra when unknown men tried to run him over because he was so good at finding illegal weapons stashes.

But the plucky pooch escaped with only cuts and bruises, and pulled through.

He's back on the streets again, and on his first day on patrol with handler Lance Corporal Steve Dineley he found a massive store of guns.

Steve said: "Blaze was really pleased to be back in action and I rolled round on the floor playing with him at the end of the day."

A pet food company have donated a big supply of dog treats to keep him happy.

Army officials said: "This dog deserves the highest praise."
