  Pampered pooches and mollycoddled mogs

Are we beginning to pamper our pets to the point of silliness?

We've had mineral water for pets, dog yoga and pampering parlours for pets only. But the latest pet trend is a little sadder.

As from Saturday, Daily Telegraph readers can place obituaries for their dead pets in the same way as people who have died are remembered.

Obituaries are pieces of writing about the life of someone, or as from Saturday, something, who has died. They usually outline the person's life and achievements.

It costs money to have an obituary published in a newspaper.

It seems a little strange for a family pet to be honoured by an expensive obituary but we do all love our furry animals and would like to remember them when they die.

Sarah Sands, Saturday editor of the Daily Telegraph, reckons there is a genuine demand for the service.

She came up with the idea when she realised "how completely grief-stricken" some pet owners are when their pets pass away.

Dog yoga

Other current trends that show how much we consider our pets as part of the family include 'dog yoga'.

Pets practise the relaxation and exercise techniques along with their owners.

The animal therapist Dan Thomas said of the first canines in the class: "Their breathing really did seem to be in sync with their owners'".

Mineral water

A firm in America has successfully started selling mineral water for dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, iguanas and pot-bellied pigs.

It's mountain spring water but not sediment filtered like human mineral water.

It sells for the equivalent of about £1.25 a bottle!

Celebrity pets

Celebrities have long been known for pampering their portable pooches - pop stars from Britney Spears to Geri Halliwell have small 'toy' dogs who seem to go everywhere with them and get star treatment.

While they often look happy enough the RSPCA reckons they could be stressed out by the celebrity treatment - dogs don't like the paparazzi and the screaming crowds at all.

If you want to get your claws into the story of celebrity pets watch Newsround Showbiz as it gets into the tiny toy dog issue on Sunday 15 August on the CBBC channel.
