Vets check out pets' pongy breath
Updated 23 March 2004, 16.37
Cat
The vets of the future could be finding out what's wrong with your pet by checking out its pongy breath.

Doctors have been analysing our breath for signs of disease for decades. Now researchers say the process is set to become more widespread for pets.

Breath samples can be painlessly taken from larger animals like dogs using a mask. Tanks are used to collect breath from smaller creatures like cats.

Human samples have helped to diagnose everything from asthma to cancer.

Researchers say pet samples will help vets diagnose liver, stomach, digestive and breathing problems.

Horses, cows, pigs, dogs, cats, rats and mice are among those creatures who will benefit from the treatment.

New technology

Scientists are developing new technology all the time and it's thought that portable breath-testers will soon be available, so pets can be checked out in the comfort of their own homes.
