Animals go for gold in 'Olympics'
Updated 11 August 2004, 15.32

With the Olympic Games on the starting blocks, the BBC has held an imaginary animal games.

The events the animals will be lining up for include the 100m sprint, high jump, long jump and shooting.

The 'games' take place in a computer graphics-based arena and the animals' relative size and power are calculated.

So a jump from a tiny flea is equivalent to a leap from a lemur. Commentary is provided by sports experts including John Motson.

A contender going for the high-jump

You can catch a Tiger Beetle dashing for the 100m against a cheetah and a cockroach.

You'll also see who's strongest between a Great White Shark and a Nile crocodile.

The programme uses all the tricks of the sports trade - slow motion replays and multi-camera action to make sure we see who crosses the line first!

To figure out which mammals, birds, insects and fish make it to the podium you'll have to watch BBC 1 Wednesday 11 August at 8pm.
