  Rhino tragedy in African reserve
Updated 06 August 2004, 16.42
White Rhino
Over half of the world's population of rare northern white rhinos were killed in a year, in a park in Africa.

The animals only live in the Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a 2003 survey counted 30 of them.

But growing numbers of poachers have been hunting the endangered beasts, and at least 14 were killed in 14 months.

Park workers are making a long-term plan, but their first aim is to protect the few surviving animals.

It's important to protect the wild white rhinos, as it's very hard to get them to breed in captivity.

White rhinos used to be widespread, with around 2,250 of them alive in the 1960s.

But poachers who wanted their horns have nearly driven them to extinction.
