  Firemen carry animal oxygen masks
Updated 04 March 2004, 20.21
Cat
Firefighters in Florida have been equipped with oxygen masks for cats, dogs and even hamsters to save pets.

Seminole County Fire Department used public donations to get five sets of the breathing kit to help animals in danger from breathing in smoke.

Fireman John Rogers said that because animals are small, "smoke affects them worse than it does a human."

The masks, which were bought through a vet, will also be used to help animals caught up in water rescues.

Fire Chief Terry Schenk said he got the idea after watching TV reports about a dog trapped by a fire.
