  Cow swallows hundreds of diamonds
Updated 18 January 2004, 16.40
The cow swallowed 1,722 gems
They say diamonds are a girl's best friend - but what about a cow's?

A cow with a taste for the finer things in life has swallowed a bag containing a whopping 1,722 diamonds, worth 492, after it was left on a haystack.

His Indian owner, Dilubhai Rajput, a diamond merchant, has spent three days feeding the cow special food like fruit so it poos out the gems.

The poor man has retrieved 310 diamonds so far, but he's still got quite a lot of cow pats to get through. Ugh!

Animal lovers

Mr Rajput said: "For three days I tried to hard to retrieve my precious gems. But killing the cow would have angered animal lovers so I tried a different way.

"I am sure within a week I will retrieve all my diamonds from the cow."
