They have been studying the Hawaiian bobtail squid, which looks for food on the sea floor with a lamp in its belly powered by glowing bacteria.
What makes it special are the plates which reflect and direct the light, as they are made from unusual proteins scientists have called "reflections".
Scientists could use them to develop tiny lighting and visual equipment.
It could be used in many areas, from tricky surgery to computer technology, so the squid might really get around!
Most animals which make light use crystals to reflect it.
It looks like reflections are only found in cephalopods, the group of animals squids come from.
