Stingray shoes on sale in shops
Updated 08 December 2003, 18.52
Shoes made from stingray
Shoes made from stingrays have gone on sale in time for Christmas.

They're made by top shoe designer Oliver Sweeney, who makes expensive shoes for all sorts of celebrities. And they'll cost a whopping 750.

But animal activists are not happy because they say the shoes could threaten rays, which have very few babies and take ages to grow.

Mr Sweeney is the man who created the shoes worn by the England rugby team when they were off the pitch.

"Stingray skin is one of nature's toughest hides," he said. "Making them was back-breaking.

He says that these shoes are so expensive because the price reflects how much work went into making each pair.

The shoes will be available in colours ranging from black to bright pink.

But a conservation officer for the Shark Trust, which looks after sharks, skates and rays, said: "The use of stingray skins to make shoes is not something we would encourage."
