Apes are in danger of extinction
Updated 26 November 2003, 07.13
Gorillas could be extinct soon
The world's apes are very close to extinction according to conservationists.

They say that around 20 million is needed to try and save species like the gorilla, orang-utan and chimpanzee.

Destruction of habitat, animal poaching and war in the countries where they live are to blame for the decline.

The western chimpanzee has already disappeared from three African countries.

Orang-utans are also in danger

The situation is also bad in other parts of the world.

In 30 years time Orang-utans in South East Asia will have not have any habitat that hasn't been disturbed by man.

As a result The United Nations has called an emergency meeting to set up a survival plan for apes.

Many countries are already trying to save their apes, but if the decline in numbers is to be stopped, immediate action must be taken right across the globe.
