Updated 02 November 2003, 15.36
The shark took off Bethany's arm
A 13-year-old surfing champion has lost her left arm after being attacked by a shark in Hawaii.

Bethany Hamilton was catching some waves with friends at Tunnels Beach on the Hawaiian island of Kauai when the attack happened.

The shark was thought to be up to 15 feet long and it also took a huge chunk out of Bethany's surfboard.

Bethany had performed well in surfing contests in Hawaii and California and was seen as a rising star in the sport.

She is now recovering in hospital from her ordeal.

Statement

Her family issued a statement confirming that Bethany had lost her left arm just below the shoulder.

Her surfboard was displayed at a local fire station. The shark took a 17-inch wide bite out of the board.
