  Giant 'dragon' terrorises city
Updated 01 September 2003, 18.05

Cats, dogs, and even a horse have apparently all been eaten by a giant lizard roaming the city of Beirut in Lebanon.

Witnesses say the beast is a Komodo Dragon, an endangered species which live in Indonesia.

Fact File
Komodo dragons
World's largest lizard
Up to 3.1m long
Weighs up to 126 kg
Kills prey with bacteria in its horrible spit
Between 1,000 and 5,000 left
Released

It's thought that the lizard was brought to the city by a foreigner, then released.

Three months ago, pets started disappearing, and people started worrying.

Komodo Dragons are a type of monitor lizard, and it's possible that the one wandering Beirut is another kind.

The local army and police are looking all over for the creature, but haven't got the equipment they need to catch it.

They are trying to get a picture of the beast to prove it is a Komodo Dragon, so they can persuade nature and science TV channels to help them catch it.
