  Hippos could become extinct
Updated 29 August 2003, 10.11
Hippo with her baby
There's been a huge drop in the number of hippos in the world and it's so serious they could become extinct.

The World Wide Fund for Nature has said something needs to be done urgently if hippos are to be saved.

Less than 30 years ago, more than 29,000 hippos lived in the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa.

Ivory trade

But counting in 2003 discovered a shocking 95% drop in numbers, with only 1,300 left.

The WWF says it's the demand for hippo teeth which has led to a huge increase in poaching the animals for the illegal ivory trade.

And it says the killing must be stopped.

It's been hard for wildlife groups to get into the park till now because of fighting in the country.
