  Injured badger goes on rampage
Updated 13 May 2003, 15.03
Normally badgers are scared of humans
A badger has gone on a 48-hour rampage and injured five people.

One man, who was the worst attacked, had to have two skin operations to fix his wounds.

But badger experts have stressed this incident is extremely rare, and badgers are normally scared of humans.

'Horror movie'
Fact File
Badgers
They live in holes called setts
They like to eat worms, mice, slugs, fruit and snails
They have 1-5 cubs between Jan-March
Badger baiting used to be common, but is now illegal
The black patches on their faces are called 'badges'

The man who was badly hurt, Michael Fitzgerald, is still in hospital after the attack.

His wife, Pam, said it was like "something out of a horror movie".

She said her husband heard a noise in their garage at night and he went out to investigate. He saw it was a badger and it went for him, and bit him several times.

'Unheard of'

The creature also bit four other people in the Worcestershire area.

A badger
It's thought the badger had escaped from a local visitor centre, where it had been kept in captivity. It was also injured when it attacked the people.

But badger expert Mike Weaver said he had never heard anything like this in 24 years of working with the animals.

"For them to attack humans is unheard of," he said. "It shows the folly of trying to keep wild animals as pets."
