Dogs to hunt death sentence hedgehogs
Updated 27 April 2003, 18.05
One of the first hedgehogs to be rescued off Uist
A pack of dogs is being brought in to speed-up the controversial killing of hedgehogs in the Outer Hebrides.

Scottish Natural Heritage wants to kill 5000 hedgehogs on Uist because they're eating rare bird eggs.

But their hunters haven't done a very good job so far.

Helping hand

They've only managed to kill about 30 and more than half of those were handed-in by islanders!

Locals get 5 for each one they find.

And rescuers who can't bear the thought of the hogs being put down have saved over 80 and plan to send another 40 to safe places on the mainland.

But now SNH is stepping up the hunt by bringing in a team of dogs.

More suffering

The four dogs - three pointers and a collie - will sniff out the hogs but not catch them.

But hog rescuers say the dogs will make the hedgehogs suffer more.

The planned cull has caused a huge row and even famous types like Sir Paul McCartney and Sting have got involved trying to save the prickly beasts.
