Time running out for Uist hedgehogs
Updated 07 April 2003, 08.00

Animal lovers in Scotland are still trying to save the hedgehogs of Uist, as authorities prepare to kill them on Monday.

Scottish National Heritage (SNH) is planning to start catching and killing the animals - called a cull - in the evening.

The 5,000 hedgehogs living on Uist like to munch on bird's eggs, and there are so many hedgehogs that some species of birds are dying out.

So the SNH has made the decision to start killing some of the hedgehogs to protect the birds.

Charities in the area are fighting to save them, and are offering people living there 5 for every hedgehog they find and take to a special collection point.

They would then all be taken to mainland of Scotland and set free, but so far only six have been handed in as part of 'Operation Tiggywinkle'.

But would-be rescuers are finding it tough to track down the animals they're trying to save because bad weather means lots of them are still hibernating.

The SNH say that the rescue plans may not work because the hedgehogs might die on the journey anyway.
