Racing pigeon flies off course and into Iraq
Updated 29 March 2003, 16.34

The pigeon now called Unlucky was found by Shaun Huntingdon

A feather-brained racing pigeon has strayed a long way off course and into a British Army camp in Iraq!

The lost, puzzled-looking bird was spotted on a tent and captured by a young soldier whose grandfather races pigeons.

Unlucky got lost

Shaun Huntingdon, who's called the bird Unlucky, said most racing pigeons wouldn't go further than Europe.

But he thinks Unlucky just got lost.

Like other racing pigeons, the bird has a green metal ring round its leg. On it is the ID number - 97.OWJan2319619.

Shaun hopes someone will recognise the number so that Unlucky can find his real owner.

Harry also arrived in Iraq by accident

Unlucky isn't the only pigeon to have arrived with the British troops by mistake.

Another pigeon - who's been nicknamed Harry - was accidentally shipped to southern Iraq with a load of ration packs!
