UK fisherwoman catches deep sea monster
Updated 21 February 2003, 17.28
Val Fletcher with her large fish!
A Cleveland fisherwoman has caught a monster three-and-a-half metre fish!

Val Fletcher was out looking for mackerel when a 63 kilogram oarfish hooked itself onto her fishing line.

Using just an ordinary rod, Val and her husband struggled to drag the creature to land.

It was hard because the giant is three times longer than Val is tall!

Oarfish can grow up to 10 metres long and are the basis for the stories of sea serpents told by ancient mariners.

It is very unusual to see one in the UK's seas, which are quite shallow.

They normally stay in the 1,000m depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Not a happy ending

London's Natural History Museum had been hoping to get the oarfish to preserve it.

But unfortunately it's already been cut up into fish steaks!
