US Navy send sea lions out to the Gulf
Updated 29 January 2003, 15.24
Sea lions have the best memories
The US Navy has sent sea lions out to Bahrain, near Iraq, to see if they can protect its ships and ports.

The trained California sea lions will be used in tests to look out for divers trying to attack America's 5th fleet, which might have to fight Iraq.

The seals will put tags on the divers, or even "restraint devices" that will stop them getting away!

The seals have been chosen because they can hear and see really well under water, and can make lots of deep dives.

Sea lion test

According to the US Navy's Lieutenant Josh Frey they won't be used for real just yet.

They're apparently only there to test how well they protect ships in a "real world environment."

The US Navy have been using sea critters like dolphins and sea lions to protect their ships for nearly thirty years.
