Voles killed because they look like rats
Updated 14 October 2002, 10.33
Numbers of water voles are dropping fast in the UK
Furry water voles are being killed because people think they're rats.

These cases of mistaken identity are really serious for the voles, because they're dying out in the UK.

Fact File
Voles
Live in burrows on river banks
Are hunted by foxes, barn owls, brown rats and pike
Their homes are threatened by pollution
Their greatest threat is the American mink

Their numbers are actually dropping faster than any other mammal in the country.

Silkier fur

The problem is that people involved in pest control are putting down poisons to kill off what they think are rats, but in fact they're killing voles instead.

Voles are different to rats because they have:

  • Small, hidden ears
  • Blunt noses
  • Shorter, furrier tails
  • Silkier fur

Voles are being killed by rat poison
Trying to stop people accidentally killing voles is just one plan The Wildlife Trust has to keep their numbers up.

They're also asking people to tell their local trust if they spot a vole.
