Thousands of species of animals could be wiped out of existence, according to scientists.

Some 11,167 species of animals are now in danger of extinction. That's 121 more than the last time they were checked in 2000.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) keeps an eye on the animals and draws up a special "Red List" of animals most at risk.

And it's people who are to blame for most of the danger to animals, because our activities are destroying the places the animals like to live in.

There are three species of animals that are most endangered:

  • The Saiga antelope, found in central Asia
  • The wild Bactrian camel, from China
  • The Iberian lynx, from Mediterranean woodland

But there is some good news.

Two animals that were thought to be extinct having been rediscovered - a type of stick insect in Australia and a kind of vole in Germany.
