  Wendy the old elephant dies
Updated 13 September 2002, 14.33
Wendy the elephant at Bristol Zoo on her 40th birthday
The second oldest Asian elephant in Britain has died aged 42 at Bristol Zoo Gardens.

Wendy sadly had to be put down because she had a very bad joint disease and would have been in pain.

She was also having problems sleeping because of her illness.

Much-loved

She was a firm favourite with visitors to the zoo but staff there have said they won't have any more elephants there now.

Zoo director Dr Jo Gipps said: "Wendy was a much loved animal and will be deeply missed."

Wendy was brought to the zoo from a logging camp in Thailand when she was a baby and was very close to her keepers.
