A flock of the indigo-winged parrots - Hapalopsittaca fuertesi - were seen on a volcano in central Colombia.

They are one of the rarest species in the world.

Where the parrots were spotted

The experts who saw them have been looking for the pretty polly for months.

Researcher Jorge Velasquez and his team were climbing through a cloudy forest when they heard piercing cries.

Then they saw flashes of reds, blues and greens through the mist and described it as a "miracle from heaven".

Helping

Experts know nothing about their breeding and living habits and where they were spotted is under threat from forest clearance for firewood and grazing.

But now they might be able to keep an eye on the birds to find out how they live, then they can start helping their numbers to grow.
