Guinea pig rehousing tour a success
Updated 19 August 2002, 19.57
Mack and Sandy, two rescued guinea pigs on the move
Over a hundred guinea pigs have successfully been re-homed on a trip around America.

Lots of volunteers came forward after an animal charity in California appealed for new owners for the rescued pets.

A huge bus took the rodents on a tour of the USA, dropping the little mammals off at new homes along the way, managing to overcome bad weather and engine trouble.

The pigs were originally rescued by The Peninsula Humane Society from someone who wasn't looking after them very well.

Although all the piggies who left California found new homes, the bus didn't come back empty - it picked up two new cases on the way.

Special needs

One was a special needs guinea pig from Wisconsin who was found in terrible conditions and will need lots of care and cuddles to get back to good health.

The other was a stow-away who somehow snuck on board without the volunteers knowing.

Now they're both being looked after at the shelter until new homes can be found for them too.
