Dogs aren't as daft as you think
Updated 31 July 2002, 19.58
Mongrel
They might look at you with a stupid expression sometimes but dogs aren't as daft as they make out.

Scientists have discovered Scruffy and Rags can count so don't try and con them out of a biscuit.

Biccies were laid out in front of some dogs. Some were taken away behind a screen so the mutts couldn't see.

Baffled

Don't cheat with the biccies
When the screen was lifted, if there weren't the number of expected snacks the baffled hounds stared at the piles much longer.

This counting skill could have once helped them work out how many enemies they had in a pack.

And they even have different barks:

  • Away from their owners they do high-pitched, single yaps.

  • The doorbell sparks off a lower and harsher bark.

  • Play barks are high pitched and come in clusters.
