Is your dog making you sick?
Updated 07 July 2002, 15.27
Dogs at play
Your dog could be making you very ill indeed, says a government expert.

Professor Hugh Pennington thinks at least half of the UK's six million doggies could be giving us a type of food poisoning called campylobacter, says the Sunday Times newspaper.

The number of people with the bug has more than doubled in the last 15 years.

He reckons the hounds pick up the campylobacter bacteria on their walkies.

Sick!

And they pass it on to us when they are stroked and cuddled.

The campylobacter infection gives humans severe tummy upsets and it can get even lead to more serious illnesses causing paralysis.

Mutate

There is no vaccine because the bug changes and mutates so quickly and there are many different types of it.

But the Professor hopes the government will back his research to find out why so many dogs are picking up the bug and passing it on.
