Clothes pegs help save baby wallaby
Updated 31 May 2002, 12.53
The baby wallaby is now able to stay in the pouch without the aid of the pegs
A baby wallaby which kept falling out of its mother's pouch has been kept alive thanks to a couple of clothes pegs.

The mum had had an injection to relax her while being moved from her cage.

The baby wallaby doesn't emerge from the mum's pouch till five months after birth

But this caused the muscles in her pouch to relax as well, so the baby wasn't held in tight.

A baby wallaby normally doesn't come out of its mother's pouch until it's five months old.

Pegs now off

Luckily, keepers at Antwerp zoo came up with the idea of putting two clothes pegs on the pouch to make it more secure for the little chap.

A spokesperson at the zoo has said they were a bit worried the pegs might fall off as the mother came round, but after two weeks they were still firmly attached.

The pegs have now been removed, as the baby is strong enough to hold itself inside the pouch without any help.
