The chicken that needs no plucking
Updated 21 May 2002, 17.23
The featherless birds would not do well in colder climates
Featherless chickens have been bred by scientists in Israel.

They say the bald bird is good news for chicken farmers.

The smooth-look chickens put all their strength into growing bigger.

The birds grow faster than the chickens with feathers

And scientists say the birds save money for meat producers because they don't need to be plucked.

Reduce polution

But animal welfare groups say that feathers are important to the birds to protect themselves from parasites and sunburn.

The breed's lack of feathers may prevent it from living happily in countries with a colder climate.

The scientists also claim that the featherless chicken could help reduce pollution.

That's because the plucking process produces large quantities of water contaminated with feathers and fat.
