Albino hedgehog saved by car accident
Updated 15 May 2002, 20.53
Albert the albino hedgehog
For most hedgehogs being hit by a car is very bad news, but for this rare albino hog it was a stoke of luck!

Albert was taken to Withington Hedgehog Hospital in Manchester after being found limping in someone's garden with an injured back and cut ear.

One in a million

There nurses immediately spotted that Albert was a very rare hedgehog: "There are other blonde hedgehogs but the pink eyes are what tells you this is an albino and they are one in a million," said carer Barbara Roberts.

Fact File
Hedgehog facts
Never feed hedgehogs bread and milk - meat pet food is best
They have between 2 and 6 babies at once
Hogs hibernate in garden sheds and compost heaps
They live between 5-6 years, but can live as old as 9
They can walk for up to two miles foraging for food
Hedgehogs are good swimmers and climbers

Albert has no colour in his skin or prickles. His white prickles and pink eyes and feet mean he's an easy snack to spot by hungry predators, so the hospital agreed to give the 10-month-old a permanent home with them.

"Left to his own devices, Albert wouldn't last five minutes because of his lack of camouflage.

"Apart from the obvious dangers of motorists, cats, dogs and other predators would spot him a mile off," explained his new carer Ms Roberts.

Yummy slugs and spiders

Albert's now living a life of luxury, tucking into his favourite of food of slugs and spiders in the safety of his own shed, away from harmful rays of sun which could give him sun burn.

And according to Ms Roberts, nothing's too much trouble for this prickly patient: "If there were sunglasses for hedgehogs we'd probably get him a pair of those too," she said.
