Race to save elephants in Sri Lanka
Updated 15 February 2002, 17.22
Elephants in Sri Lanka
Elephants in Sri Lanka are dying out and the race is on to save them.

There used to be tens of thousands of wild elephants in Sri Lanka but now there are only around 3000 left.

Map of Sri Lanka

Their numbers are dwindling because the human population in Sri Lanka has increased and the jungles where the elephants live have been cut down.

Many of the animals have been shot by villagers for trampling on crops.

And elephants in return have killed people who get in their way.

Sri Lanka also has working elephants and many of these are also dying out through old age and insufficient care.

The Millennium Elephant Foundation is one charity which is working to improve the lives of elephants.

Mobile help

Elephant
They have a mobile clinic which travels around the country treating sick and elderly elephants.

In the wild more elephants could be saved if they were moved to areas set aside just for them so they don't hurt people or crops.

Find out more about the elephants including how you can adopt one, by clicking on the Millennium Elephant Foundation web link on the right-hand side.
