  Search for 'pet idols'
Updated 27 November 2001, 22.11

The search is on for the greatest animal lovers in the country.

The BBC is looking for 'pet idols' who do extraordinary work and are completely devoted to our four-legged friends.

Winners will be revealed in the first-ever BBC Animal Awards, hosted by Gaby Roslin on 2 December. Special guests will include S Club 7 and the Blue Peter presenters.

Chosen by experts

Awards will be given in lots of categories, such as Outstanding work in animal welfare, Lifetime achievement and a prize for the top vet.

TV viewers of BBC's Animal Hospital got the chance to vote for the animal welfare award on Monday, and the rest of the winners are chosen by experts.

The ceremony will be shown on the BBC over the Christmas holidays.
