  Badger baiters target Scotland
Updated 20 November 2001, 15.59
Badger
Wildlife conservation experts are worried that gangs of thieves from England are stealing badgers from Scotland to use in "badger baiting".

Experts say gangs think Scotland's protection laws are not as tough as England's and now the charity Scottish Badgers wants help from the public to catch gangs.

Illegal

Fact File
Badgers and baiting
Baiting used to be popular spectator sport
Illegal since 1835
Badgers are protected by the 1992 Badgers Act
Baiting clubs meet in remote barns or pubs
Badgers can be sold into baiting for £1,000
They live in setts

Badger thieves use dogs fitted with electronic collars to find the badgers underground. When they know where they are, they dig them out.

Then they sell them to clubs to be used as "bait" in illegal fights between dogs and badgers, which they see as "sport". It's called "badger baiting" and is against the law.

Remote

The charity wants the public to be on the look-out for suspicious cars in the night around areas where badgers live.

If you see people with digging equipment and dogs in badger areas, police badger experts say:

  • Don't approach them but note the registration number of any vehicle nearby and telephone the local police
  • If you know someone who's committing crimes against badgers or other wildlife, call Crimestoppers for free on 0800 555111
