Between 96/97 and 02/03, BBC News' income increased by 34%. The new TV channels (BBC News 24, BBC Parliament & BBC World) and the transfer of World Service news account for most of the growth. News has also received additional money to cover UK General Elections in 1997 and 2001 and major events such as 9/11 and the war in Iraq.

As well as receiving additional money for new output, BBC News has self-funded investments in output by restructuring, implementing new working practices and efficiencies...

In 02/03, 85% of BBC News' income came from the licence fee. This leaves 9% coming from the Foreign Office (through the World Service commissioners) for World Service and 6% is commercial income, which includes the cost of the output for BBC World.
