To work out which seats are treated as gains and losses the BBC compares the results of the 2003 election with those of the current ballot. This is why Blaenau Gwent is being treated as an independent "gain", even though Trish Law first won the seat at a by-election in 2006.

NOTIONAL 2003 RESULTS FOR BLAENAU GWENT*
LAB LAB 2003 70.2%
LD LD 2003 10.9%
PC PC 2003 9.6%
CON CON 2003 5.7%
UKIP UKIP 2003 1.4%
*Due to boundary changes it is only possible to compare election results from 2003 and 2007 by creating notional figures. These notional results, compiled by professors Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher of Plymouth University, take the figures from the 2003 election and apply them to the new boundaries which are being used for the first time on 3 May. Some seats have been unaffected by boundary changes, where this is the case the original figures from 2003 have been retained.
