Guide to voting
Introduction

Voting

In person: This is still the most common way of voting. Polling stations are set up in suitable public buildings, such as schools or community centres. You should receive a polling card a week or two before elections, giving details of where to vote.

By post: You don't have to give a reason for wanting a postal vote, except in Northern Ireland.

Application forms are available from local election offices - usually council offices - or they can be downloaded from the council's website or that of the Electoral Commission.

Applicants must fill in an identity confirmation form, and a witness must also sign it. The ballot paper and form will normally be sent out a week or so before polling day.

Proxy voting: You can appoint someone else to cast your vote on your behalf, but you must give an acceptable reason, such as being physically incapable of getting to a polling station or having an overseas business appointment.

Application forms are available in the same way as for postal votes.

Your proxy must be on the electoral register, and although the person does not have to live in the same constituency, he or she must vote at your polling station, or apply to vote by post on your behalf.

If you want a proxy vote for all future elections, your application must also be signed by your employer or doctor, depending on your reason.

You can still vote in person on the day, as long as your proxy has not already cast your vote. Applications for postal and proxy voting in the coming election must reach councils by 5pm on 26 April.
